Club Car DS Rear Axle 1018915-01: What It Does, How It Fails, and How to Replace It
Club Car DS · Rear Axle Guide
One steel shaft carries every bit of engine torque to your left rear wheel — and it's the part nobody thinks about until it starts clunking. Here's what the driver-side rear axle actually does on a Club Car DS gas cart, how to tell when yours is done, and what it takes to swap it.
The Short Version
What This Axle Actually Does
Your engine makes torque, the transaxle splits it, and one shaft per side carries it out to the wheel. That shaft is the rear axle — and it does more than just spin.
On a Club Car DS gas cart, power runs from the engine into the transaxle, where the differential divides it between the two rear wheels. The axle shaft (sometimes called a half shaft) is the last link in that chain: splines on the inboard end engage the differential side gear, splines on the outboard end engage the wheel hub. Every time you touch the pedal, all of the torque headed for that wheel passes through this one piece of steel.
It also does a second job that gets overlooked. The outer end of the shaft is what the hub rides on, so it helps carry the cart's weight and keeps the rear wheel located — which is why a worn axle doesn't just make noise, it makes the wheel wander.

Will It Fit Your Cart?
Fitment is the whole game with driveline parts. Match all four of these, not just the model name:
| Check | This Part | How to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Club Car DS | Badge on the body — DS has the older, boxier front cowl |
| Model years | 1997–2014 | Serial plate under the passenger-side glove box |
| Fuel type | Gas only | Fuel cap and engine bay — gas and electric drivelines are different |
| Side | Driver side (left) | Which wheel has the play, the leak, or the noise |

Troubleshooting
4 Signs Your Rear Axle Is Failing
Axle wear nearly always announces itself. These are the four you'll notice from the driver's seat:
Clunk on take-off
A single heavy knock from the rear when you accelerate or let off the pedal — classic worn splines on the axle or in the hub.
Wheel play
Jack up the rear, grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. Any movement means the shaft, hub, or bearing is worn out.
Gear oil where it shouldn't be
Wetness around the axle tube or a drip under the differential means the seal has given up — and a shaft that ran dry is already damaged.
Grinding that tracks speed
A rumble or whine that rises and falls with road speed points past the wheel bearing and into the shaft or differential.
The Job
How to Replace It: 4 Steps
A straightforward job on a DS — a couple of hours in a home garage with basic hand tools. Work on level ground, and support the frame, never the axle.
Secure the cart and pull the wheel
Chock the front wheels, jack the frame, and set it on jack stands on both sides. Remove the rear wheel, then pull the cotter pin and castle nut to free the hub.
Slide the old shaft out
Pull the hub off the splines, then draw the shaft straight out of the differential. Watch for the snap ring or retaining clip on the inboard end — don't let it drop into the housing.
Inspect before you reassemble
Check the hub splines for rounding (a rounded hub will wreck a new shaft), replace the axle seal, and confirm the differential oil is clean — not milky, not full of metal.
Fit the new shaft and refill
Seat 1018915-01 fully into the side gear, refit the hub, torque the castle nut to the spec in your service manual, and top up the differential oil before the test drive.
FAQ
Driver Side Rear Axle 1018915-01: Your Questions
Is this the driver side or the passenger side?
Driver side — the left side on a US-spec cart. The two sides are not interchangeable on these models, so confirm which wheel is actually bad before ordering. If it's the right rear, you need the passenger-side part number instead.
Will it fit my Club Car DS? Which years?
It's built for Club Car DS gas carts from 1997 through 2014. Check the serial plate under the passenger-side glove box to confirm your year, and confirm you're on a gas cart — the electric driveline uses different components.
Does it fit electric DS carts or Precedent models?
This listing is for the DS gas driveline. Electric carts and Precedent models use different axle assemblies, so don't assume a match — verify your exact model and serial number, and match the OEM part number rather than the model name.
Do I need to replace both sides at once?
Not necessarily — replace the side that's worn. But if the failure came from a dry or contaminated differential, the opposite shaft lived the same life. Inspect both, along with the hub splines, before you button it up.
What else should I replace while I'm in there?
The axle seal at minimum — it's cheap and it's already apart. Check the hub splines for rounding, inspect the wheel bearing, and plan on fresh differential oil. Replacing the seal is the difference between a job you do once and a job you do twice.
Can I install it myself?
If you can safely support the cart on jack stands and torque fasteners to spec, yes. Jack the frame, never the axle. If you're unsure about the castle nut torque or the retaining hardware, one shop hour is cheaper than damaging a new shaft.
