Crankcase Breather Filter 3584145 for Volvo Penta® D4, D6 & D9: Fitment, Symptoms and Replacement Guide

If you run a Volvo Penta D4, D6 or D9 - in a planing cruiser, a workboat, a genset or an industrial installation - the crankcase breather filter is one of the cheapest parts on the engine and one of the easiest to forget about. It sits quietly on top of the engine doing an unglamorous job, and when it loads up with oil the symptoms get misdiagnosed as something far more expensive: a leaking turbo, worn valve guides, or "the engine is just using a bit of oil".

This guide covers what part 3584145 actually does, how it is built, which engines it fits, how to tell when it is finished, how to change it, and what else to put in the same box.

01  What a crankcase breather filter actually does

Every diesel engine leaks a small amount of combustion gas past the piston rings - blow-by. Left untreated, that gas pressurises the crankcase, pushes oil past seals and gaskets, and vents oily mist into the engine room or the atmosphere. The breather filter sits in that vent path and separates the oil out of the gas: oil drains back to the sump, cleaned gas is recirculated into the air intake.

How the 3584145 fits into the crankcase ventilation circuit - and what a clogged element does to it.

Three things go right when the element is working

🟢 Stable crankcase pressure

The rear main seal, cam cover gasket and front crank seal are no longer asked to hold back pressure they were never designed for.

🔵 A clean intake tract

On a turbocharged D4 or D6, oil mist that gets past the breather coats the compressor wheel, the intercooler and the charge-air piping.

🟠 Oil stays in the engine

A saturated element stops separating and starts passing oil - which shows up as rising oil consumption with no drip in the bilge.

A note for marine installations

An open or bypassed breather vents oil mist into the engine room, where it settles on belts, wiring and hot surfaces. Bilge and engine-room cleanliness is a survey and insurance issue, not just housekeeping.

02  Element anatomy & dimensions

The 3584145 is a drop-in filter element, not a complete assembly. It slides into the closed crankcase ventilation housing bolted to the engine, seals against the housing face, and is held by the housing cap or clamp.

Numbered anatomy of the 3584145 element: sealing face, pleated media, centre tube and closed base.
Feature Specification Why it matters
Overall length 160 mm Must match the housing depth - a longer element will not seat
Sealing face Ø86 mm, with an orange seal band This is the only gas-tight joint; a hardened seal leaks like an empty housing
Base diameter Ø71 mm Tapered body - the blind end cannot be fitted the wrong way round by accident
Media Pleated depth-filter material Holds oil droplets inside the fibre matrix; not washable or reusable
Centre tube Perforated core Cleaned gas leaves through the core back to the intake
Part type Aftermarket replacement for Volvo Penta 3584145 Same dimensions and sealing face as the original reference

Fit note

Seat the element squarely on the Ø86 mm face, then tighten the cap until snug. Crankcase ventilation housings are usually alloy or composite - overtightening cracks them.

03  Which engines does 3584145 fit?

The element is shared right across the modern Volvo Penta range, which is why one part number turns up on so many boats and industrial sets. The fitment list published on the 3584145 product page at Buymachineryparts covers, among others:

One element, three engine families - and the five reference numbers that all mean 3584145.
Engine family Typical models covered Where you will see it
Volvo Penta D4 D4-180I-B / -C / -D / -F, D4-225A-F, D4-225I-F - plus the wider D4-210 / D4-260 / D4-300 range Shaft and sterndrive cruisers, 30-45 ft
Volvo Penta D6 D6-280A-A / -B / -C, D6-300A-F, D6-300D-F, D6-300I-F - plus D6-310 / -330 / -350 / -370 / -400 / -435 Larger cruisers, pilot boats, light commercial
Volvo Penta D9 D9A2A, D9-425, D9-500, D9A2A MG, D9A-MG - plus D9-575 and D9-MH variants Workboats, gensets, industrial and auxiliary drives

Model suffix matters

Volvo Penta fitment is model and suffix sensitive. A D6-300A-F and a D6-300I-F are different installations, and the D9 range runs several build lists. Match the full designation on the engine serial plate (for example D6-300I-F, not just D6-300) against the fitment list before ordering. If your suffix is not listed, send the model and serial number to the Buymachineryparts team and they will confirm the match before the part ships.

04  Cross-reference numbers

Because this element is shared across so many installations, the aftermarket uses several reference numbers for the same physical part. If you have been buying under one of these, 3584145 is the Volvo Penta number it replaces.

Brand Reference number Notes
Volvo Penta 3584145 Original manufacturer reference
Recmar REC3584145 Aftermarket brand, common in marine supply
Orbitrade ORB17145 / 17145 Two numbers circulating for the same element
SLP CF-145 Cross-reference used by some EU distributors
Crom 114101 Cross-reference used by some EU distributors

Cross-references are provided for identification only. Brand names and part numbers remain the property of their respective owners.

Not a genuine Volvo Penta boxed part

The part supplied by Buymachineryparts is an aftermarket replacement built to match the original 3584145 dimensions and sealing face. Volvo Penta numbers are used for reference and identification only.

05  Six signs your crankcase breather filter is finished

None of these is dramatic on its own, which is exactly why the filter gets missed. Three of them appearing together is a reliable diagnosis.

# Symptom What it usually means Act
1 Oil film around the breather housing Vapour is escaping instead of passing through the media - the seal or the element is passing Inspect
2 Oil consumption creeping up, no visible leak Oil is leaving through the intake rather than dripping into the bilge Check now
3 Oily residue in the intake tract Wet, runny oil in the charge-air hose is not normal on any hour count Check now
4 Oil weeping from seals or the dipstick tube Positive crankcase pressure finding the path of least resistance Check now
5 A whistling or hissing note from the breather A blocked element with pressure escaping past a seal Inspect
6 The element is heavy, dark, soft or collapsed It is saturated. Do not wash it out and refit it - the media is not serviceable Replace

The cheap test

Pulling the element takes minutes. If it is wet, dark and heavy, you have found your oil consumption, your intake film and your seal weep in one place.

06  How often should it be replaced?

The interval most parts specialists and service schedules work to for the D4/D6/D9 crankcase filter is every 200 running hours or annually, whichever comes first. Season-only boats running 60-80 hours a summer can usually work to the annual mark; charter, delivery and commercial vessels should be changing it several times a season.

Duty profile Typical hours per year Practical change interval
Seasonal private cruiser 60 - 80 h Once a year, at lay-up service
Active cruiser / liveaboard 150 - 250 h Every 200 hours (1 - 2 times a year)
Charter or delivery boat 400 - 600 h 2 - 3 times a season
Commercial / genset 800 - 1,000+ h 4 - 5 times a season
Any duty with long idling Any Shorten the interval - low-load running makes more blow-by per hour

Always confirm against your engine's operator's manual. At the price of the part, changing it early costs nothing next to the intake cleaning or turbo work it prevents.

07  How to replace it: step by step

A crankcase breather element is a fifteen-minute job with basic hand tools. Work on a cold engine.

1Shut down and isolate

Engine off, battery isolator off or ignition key removed, engine room ventilated.

2Find the housing

On D4 and D6 installations the closed crankcase ventilation filter sits on or alongside the cam cover - a cylindrical canister roughly 160 mm long with a clamp, bayonet cap or bolted top.

3Clean the area first

Wipe the housing and everything around it. Any grit that falls into an open crankcase vent goes straight to the bearings.

4Release the cap and lift out the old element

Note its orientation before it comes out. Expect it to be heavy with oil - have a rag and a disposal bag ready.

5Inspect the sealing face and the seal

The Ø86 mm end is the sealing point. A flattened, cracked or hardened seal will leak just like the old element did.

6Check the breather hoses

Squeeze the hose from the crankcase to the filter and any drain-back line. Soft, collapsed or sludge-packed hose is a common reason a fresh element fails early.

7Fit the new 3584145 element

Seat it squarely on the sealing face, refit the cap or clamp and tighten until snug. Do not lean on it.

8Run and check

Start the engine, let it reach temperature, then look for oil mist at the cap and listen for hissing. Wipe the housing clean so the next inspection is easy to read.

9Log it

Date, engine hours, part number. The next person to service the engine will thank you.

08  What to order at the same time

Once the breather housing is open and the tools are out, the filters that share the same service window are worth doing in one go - one shipping cost, one afternoon, one maintenance entry. Everything below ships from the same Buymachineryparts warehouse.

09  Why buy engine filters from Buymachineryparts

Buymachineryparts is built for one specific job: getting the right replacement part to a machine that is standing still. Instead of a thin catalogue of bestsellers, the store carries a deep inventory of engine, hydraulic and drivetrain components for marine, construction, agricultural and industrial equipment - so the breather filter, the oil filter and the fuel filter for the same Volvo Penta service come from the same place, in the same box.

✅ Fitment listed at model level

The 3584145 listing spells out the D4, D6 and D9 model suffixes it covers, so you are not guessing from "fits Volvo Penta D4".

💰 A sensible price on a consumable

This is a part you buy repeatedly. Paying dealer-counter prices for an element you change every season is hard to justify.

🔍 Cross-reference support

Send the number on your old part - Volvo Penta, Recmar, Orbitrade, SLP or another - and the team will match it.

📦 One order for the whole service

Breather element, oil filter, fuel filter and service kits ship together from our own warehouse.

🏷️ Aftermarket parts, labelled as such

Every listing is an aftermarket replacement. OEM numbers are shown to identify what a part replaces - never to suggest it is a genuine factory-boxed part.

10  Frequently asked questions

Is 3584145 the filter element or the whole housing?

It is the replaceable filter element - the insert that goes inside the crankcase ventilation housing. The housing itself is a separate part and rarely needs replacing unless it is cracked or the mounting face is damaged.

Can I clean and reuse the crankcase breather filter?

No. The media is a depth-filter material that holds oil inside the fibre matrix. Washing does not restore it, and solvents can break the media down. Replacement elements are inexpensive; reuse is a false economy that leads to oil carryover.

What happens if I run the engine without the breather filter?

Short term the engine will run, but it will vent oil mist continuously - into the intake on a closed system, or into the engine room on an open one. Longer term you get oil-fouled charge-air components, a contaminated intake tract and, on high-pressure crankcases, oil pushed past seals. It is not an acceptable long-term workaround.

My D6 uses oil but there is no leak - is the breather filter the cause?

It is the first thing to check, because it is the cheapest. Confirm by inspecting the element and the turbo inlet hose for wet oil. If a fresh element does not slow the consumption, look at turbo shaft sealing and crankcase pressure from ring blow-by.

How often should the Volvo Penta 3584145 crankcase filter be replaced?

Commonly every 200 running hours or annually, whichever comes first. Confirm against your engine operator's manual, and shorten the interval for low-load, high-idle or commercial duty.

Is this a genuine Volvo Penta part?

The Buymachineryparts listing is an aftermarket replacement manufactured to match the original 3584145 dimensions and sealing face. Volvo Penta part numbers are used for reference and identification only.

How do I confirm it fits my exact engine?

Read the full model designation off the engine serial plate - for example D6-300I-F, not just "D6-300" - and match it against the fitment list on the product page. If your suffix is not listed, send the model and serial number to Buymachineryparts before ordering.

Need a 3584145 crankcase breather filter?

Order the 160 mm element for your Volvo Penta D4, D6 or D9 from Buymachineryparts, and add the matching oil and fuel filters to the same shipment. Send your engine model and serial number if you want the fitment confirmed before dispatch.
